ISO50001 Ireland 2014 is an industry conference which will bring together approximately 120 senior management from Irish Business who are considering the transition to this International energy standard, but have yet to make the journey.

The theme/profile of this event is simply to create an exchange of information between organisations who are about to make the transition to ISO50001 and companies who have already made the transition. Our speakers have been carefully selected based on their experiences and knowledge of this standard and are keen to network with delegates in an effort to develop the standard further within Ireland.

Enda McDonagh – Head of Environmental Engineering – Bord NaMona

endamcdonaghEnda is Environmental Manager at Bord na Mona Energy Ltd, which is part of the Bord na Mona PLC group of companies. Bord na Mona Energy Ltd is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency under a number of Integrated Pollution Control Licences and two Waste Licensed facilities, with these regulatory requirements and commitments regarding archaeology, quality management , boundary management and energy management coming under this department.

Bord na Mona Energy’s operations at seven locations across the midlands, harvests and transports, by road and rail, milled peat and horticultural peat to Lough Ree, West Offaly and Edenderry Power Stations, Briquette Factories at Littleton and Derrinlough and Horticultural operations at Ballivor and Kilberry. These operations also provide auxiliary services through workshops, such as maintenance of all plant and machinery, fuel handling and bog drainage maintenance.

Bord na Mona at the Mountdillon Group of bogs, which supplies peat to ESB’s Lough Ree Power’s 100MW Peat Fired Station, received accreditation to ISO50001 in November 2012 with the assistance of SEAI’s Energy Agreements Programme and Capstone Energy Management Ltd.

Ryan Beesley – IBM – Smarter Infrastructure Executive

RyanbeesleyRyan Beesley, a Certified Commercial Investment Member, has over 14 years experience with manufacturing and commercial real estate in the areas of program development, operations, organisational strategy design, and vendor management.

In his global role with IBM, Ryan helps clients develop and deploy enterprise solutions designed to reduce costs and add business value, particularly in organisations with complex systems.

Prior to this Ryan was the Global Director of Energy Consulting and Advisory Services with Ingersoll Rand / Trane.  Ryan developed the ECAS program designed to take a holistic approach to Utility Optimisation and Sustainability.  The ECAS Program has enabled large complex users of utilities to reduce expense by up to 20% through the implementation of both supply side and demand side strategies.  Previously Ryan was a key driver of the Utility Optimisation and Sustainability Team at CB Richard Ellis where the team was responsible for approximately 2.2 BSF and approximately $6B in annual spend.

Paul Boylan – Sustainability Green Economy Specialist

paulboylan175I have previously worked in Citi for nearly 15 years in a senior management capacity. Setting aside my passions for Engineering, Project Management, Premises Operations and Maintenance etc., I am very engaged in matters of sustainability and my focus in recent years has been on implementing energy/environmental initiatives, sharing best practices, raising awareness and closing the loop on the many strands associated with ‘being green’. These strands range anywhere from corporate social responsibility to participation in the green economy.

 Lieutenant Commander Gerard Menihane – Irish Naval Service

2d9465eOur effort towards ISO 50001 retention focused on activities which contribute to increasing energy efficiency, thus reducing energy consumption and its associated cost. Certification has lead to reduced GHG emissions and carbon footprint, increased energy awareness among staff, facilitated decision-making processes in incorporating energy considerations from system design through to operation, and improved corporate responsibility – affirmed Gerard Menihane, Lieutenant Commander, Officer In Charge Electrical & Electronic Section – The in-depth assessment performed by Certification Europe helped us turn the Energy Management System at the Naval Service into a fluid process rather than a set of loosely interlinked activities”, added Lt Cdr Menihane.

Eamonn Williams – Facility Manager – Aviva Stadium

eamonnwilliamsEamonn joined the stadium in 2009 just six months prior to opening in May 2010.  His background is in Manufacturing and Healthcare Facilities and Energy Utilities.  He is head of the technical team who are responsible for continuity of services on match days and the total facility maintenance, upkeep and operation.  He manages all utility issues and is responsible for implementing the new ISO 50001 Energy Management System making Aviva Stadium the 1st sports stadium in the world to achieve this certification.  His focus is on benchmarking within the sports stadium environment and he works with peers in Ireland, UK and Europe.

Aidan Byrne, BEng, BSc – Maintenance Officer, Aviva Stadium

aidanbyrneAidan joined the stadium 6 months prior to opening in 2010. Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, he is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the stadium and its’ technical facilities.  Since graduating in 2008 as a Building Services Engineer, Aidan worked with purified water treatment  solutions for the Pharma industry.  During his time at Aviva Stadium, he was jointly responsible for implementation of the ISO 50001 Energy Management System with his colleague Eamonn Williams.  He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Services and Energy Management, and is due to have his findings relating to their implementation of  ISO 50001 published in the Journal of Sustainable Design & Applied Research.

 Pat Mehigan – Facility Manager – Tyndall Institute

Certified energy manager with ISO 50001 implementation experience.
Shortlisted for 2009 SEAI Energy retrofit project.
Winner 2010 SEAI Renewable Energy Project.
Winner SEAI Outstanding leadership in Energy management 2012.

Pat is Facility Manager at Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, one of Europe’s leading research centres, specialising in ICT hardware research, with ca 420 staff, students and academic & industrial visiting researchers.
The site is heavily serviced with cleanroom HVAC systems, chilled water, process cooling / heating systems, compressed air, vacuum, liquid nitrogen etc.
Main duties include:

  • Maintaining and promoting energy management throughout the site.
  • Strategic Facility Planning.
  • Budget planning and control.
  • Capital investment planning.
  • Generating and maintaining SLA’s with main suppliers.
  • Project management of minor works / capital investments.
  • User representative on major refurbishment projects.

John RyanAs an expert and advisor in the area of energy/carbon management, John has delivered seminars, workshops and training courses internationally on sustainable energy management (ISO 50001); is co-author of energy management systems – an Implementation Guide & an Audit Guide and of “Energy Managment, Practices and Principles” a MEUC and British Gas publication.

With a background in science, John has been involved in arena of business risk management system design, implementation, maintenance and audit for the past 15 years. This has included the standards in the following areas:

  • Energy Management (IS 393; EN 16001, ISO 50001)
  • Environmental Management (ISO 14001; BS 8901; LCA; Eco-design; Due Diligence)

John joined the company in June 2013 to lead Kingspan’s IT Strategy. A Chartered Engineer ( C Eng FIEI ) and a registered European Professional Engineer (Eur Ing) with 25+ years’ experience in Energy, Pharma and Manufacturing sectors. John holds an MBA in Technology Management and a Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics Engineering from University College Dublin. A senior member of the IEEE, (SMIEEE), John joined Kingspan from Mainstream where he was hired as CIO during the start-up phase, having previously held senior IT executive positions in Pfizer, Accenture and General Electric.

John has contributed extensively to the emerging field of Sustainable IT and is an active contributor to the Smart Energy Reference Architecture. Working with The Innovation Value Institute , John piloted the Institute’s Cloud Readiness Assessment, a key tool for businesses moving IT services to the cloud. In his role as Chairman of the Computing Division of Engineers Ireland , John brought a voice to Engineers working in IT while also bringing IT professionals into the new Computing Division. At Kingspan and earlier at Mainstream, John led the IT team to achieve ISO27001 and ISO20000 certifications for Security and Service Excellence for both global organisations.

Dr.Mike Brogan – Enerit

MikeBroganMike Brogan is co-founder of Enerit and has been responsible for energy and environmental management software projects for public sector organizations and multinational corporations throughout the world. Mike has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Ireland and is a member of the ISO/TC 242 Energy Management committee for Ireland.

His experience includes:

  • Energy management in industry and buildings
  • Management systems (ISO 50001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001)
  • Design of software solutions for these sectors and systems
  • Delivery of software to organizations globally for almost 20 years.

Founded in 2004, Enerit is the second software company that Mike and the management team at Enerit have founded.
